Nicola is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery in University College Cork. Nicola has co-led the coordination of a programme of research on the ‘Systematic Implementation of Advance Care Directives in Irish Long-Term Care Settings’, funded by the Heath Research Board (HRB) and the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF). She is currently PI/Co-PI on four nationally funded projects in the area of dementia, palliative care and contemporary end-of-life care issues. She is a member of the Strategic Scientific Committee for the AIIHPC Palliative Care Research Network. She currently supervises 6 PhD/MSc Res students and a postdoctoral researcher, primarily with a focus on palliative and end-of-life care. She is an active member of the health ageing cluster within the School of Nursing and Midwifery and was co-representative for COLLAGE on the A1 action group (Adherence, including user empowerment) with EIP-AHA from 2013-2015. She is the current Co-Founder, VP and President Elect for the Irish Chapter Omega Epsilon, of Sigma Theta Tau.
